I Slovenia Trip Itinerary

Slovenia is a destination for dreamers who want to act. The allure of magnificent vistas, old world charm, and colorful people makes Slovenia the perfect destination for the discerning traveler. One you discover the fairytale romance that’s at the very heart of Europe’s best kept secret, you’ll carry that magic with you forever after.

Day 1: Meet, winery visit, Ljubljana tour, Dinner.

Day 2: Lake Bled, Bee keeping, Vintgar Gorges

Day 3: Lake Bohinj, Cheese farm, Medieval town, Gingerbread, Cooking class

Day 4: Skocjan caves, Karst, Wine tasting in Vipava valley

Day 5:Day trip tp the Coast, Izola, Piran, olive oil, Seafood

Day 6: Transfer to Venice airport.

 

Day 1: Meet, winery visit, introduction tour, Dinner.

We’ll gather at the Venice airport, from where we’ll journey to Goriska Brda, The Tuscany of Slovenia. There’s really only one way to begin our tour in style, by visiting a local wine estate. After a wine tasting, followed by lunch, we’ll continue on to our accommodations, a charming boutique hotel in the center of Ljubljana.

Verdant and vibrant, the city of Ljubljana is the perfect blend of Germanic and Mediterranean cultures, with a healthy dose of Slavic influence. Of course the city exudes it’s own unique brand of charm, which delights and enchants the curious wanderer. The cobbled streets surrounding the Old Town area of Ljubljana, are alive with activity. From the statue in the main square, that once caused a national divide, to the mesmerizing shoemakers stone-clad triple bridge, to the sunset-colored University buildings that populate Congress Square, famed National and University Library, we’ll explore and learn much about the sites and personality of Ljubljana.

The renown architecture of Jose Plecnik is on display throughout this lovely city, but there is so much more to see. Other sites include Medieval statues, a beautiful cathedral, and bustling town square, surrounded by an emerald green waterway backdrop. We’ll wrap up our tour with a stroll across the legendary triple bridge to peruse the central market. This sizable market offers the freshest locally grown produce, and fine homemade goods. After our busy day we’ll gather for a welcome dinner at a popular local restaurant. 

Day 2: Lake Bled, beekeeping, Vintgar gorge.

Our second day in this unassuming paradise begins with breakfast, then a scenic journey through the sweeping mountain vistas that surround the emerald green waters of Lake Bled. We’ll get up-close, and personal with the famed waterway as we board a traditional wooden boat, a pletna, which will transport us to Bled Island for a memorably flavorful lunch. We’ll sample the famous pastry of Bled, Kremsnita, a decadent puff pastry, filled with luscious egg-rich vanilla custard, and topped off with a generous sprinkle of confectioners sugar.

After our lunch we’ll visit a local beekeeper, who’s been recognized and awarded multiple times for his craft. We’ll be captivated as we learn about the world of this busy little creature, how they play a role in every aspect of our ecosystem, and the fascinating truth about why beekeepers live longer than average. The sweet surprise? We’ll sample several different types of locally harvested Slovenian honey, sip some Mead (the ancient, and legendary, honey brandy), and try flower pollen, a proven method for staying healthy, and powering-up your immune system. Our journey continues as we visit one of the most stunning and beautiful examples of nature-in-action, Vintgar Gorge. Limestone cliffs peak in excess of 300 feet, as far below, the River Radovna snakes its way through the canyon. The natural beauty of Vintgar Gorge is a balm for all the senses. A series of contradictions, you may find a peaceful and serene pool of water ‘round the bend, or happen upon a tempestuous river rapid, as we enjoy our walk along the gorge.

This evening you are free to enjoy the evening at your leisure in lovely Ljubljana.

Day 3: Lake Bohinj, Cheese farm, Medieval town, Gingerbread, Cooking class

After breakfast we’ll travel to Lake Bohinj, and pay a visit to a local organic farm where cheese is produced. Amid the breathtaking green pastures, and lull of grazing cows, you’ll feel transported to back to the early days of Alpine cheese making. Bohinj cheese is one of the most sought-after, and celebrated Emmental cheeses in all of Slovenia, and arguably, the world. But why not? The cheese artisans of Bohinj have had hundreds of years to perfect their craft. Next comes lunch. We’ll dine in a local restaurant where we’ll sample a traditional Slovenian style lunch. Then we travel to Radovljica, a town that could have been lifted from the pages of a Grimm’s Brothers fairy tale. What else would do but a visit to the Gingerbread Museum and Workshop? Long ago gingerbread hearts were presented as a token of love; a sort of anytime valentine. The ages-old tradition of presenting a loved one with this tasty token is quite the intricate process. We’ll visit the 400 year old house where these gifts of love have been lovingly crafted for centuries, learning what is involved, from creating the dough to decorating the perfect gingerbread heart.

We’ll return to Ljubljana so you may freshen up before we attend our cooking class. We’ll take part in a private session, custom-crafted just for us. This will take place in one of the better local restaurants which has been closed to the public for our benefit. Local food artisans will share their family recipes as we learn how to prepare some of the traditional dishes of Slovenia. Then it’s time for us to enjoy the fruits of our labor, a four-course meal, richly-flavored, and presented in perfection, with digestives, and wine, as is the tradition of Slovenian epicure.

Day 4: Skocjan caves, Karst, Wine tasting in Vipava valley

Our exciting day begins after breakfast with a trip to the Skocjan Caves. A UNESCO World Heritage site since 1986, this 6 km (3.7 miles) long system of caves is one of the largest known underground canyons in the world. Accompanied by our local tour guide, we’ll wander through the caves amid dripstones and mineral deposits, frosty white stalactites and stalagmites that look remarkably like snow drifts. This unique setting and natural treasure is made even more magical, as the Reka River flows freely through the canyon, providing a soothing hum as we wander and explore. After exploring the caves, we head to the Karst region. Karst is a landscape that’s characterized by exposed and eroded limestone formations. This region of Slovenia is well-known for their magnificent prosciutto. This particular local delicacy, an air-dried, cured ham, is produced only in the Karst region. We’ll visit a local family-run homestead to learn more about this magnificent prosciutto, and it’s centuries-old method of production. We’ll be able to sample this heavenly indulgence, as well as other local delicacies, whetting your appetite for lunch in the homestead restaurant.

The Vipava Valley is next on our tour. This fertile valley is alive with nature. Trees burst forth, flowers bloom, and lush, vibrant scenery dances into view. It’s no wonder this gorgeous and idyllic natural wonderland is the home to vineyards which produce some of the most outstanding red and white wines. Wines from the Vipava Valley region have been described as elegant, and harmonious, with an ostensibly rich bouquet. Our journey will bring us to a one cellar where this superb wine has been produced for more than 400 years. Recognized as one of the finest representatives of wines from Vipava Valley, their rich history of wine-making incorporates biodynamic methods of wine-growing and production that ensures ecological integrity.

We’ll return to Ljubljana to enjoy the evening at your leisure.

Day 5: Day trip tp the Coast, Izola, Piran, olive oil, Seafood

We’ll gather, after breakfast, for our drive to Izola. This charming seaport town boasts a large marina, with a touch of Venice. Here we will pay a visit to an olive oil producer, a two-time world champion. It’s both an honor and rare privilege to meet with such a prestigious artisan. He isn’t eager to share his secrets with just anyone. Our esteemed host will invite us to his fascinating olive tree estate where he will share with us the tremendous benefits of this liquid gold, as a balm for both body and soul. Our host will regale us with stories of his experiences as a world champion, and share what adds the unique richness to his olive trees that make his oil so outstanding (hint: it’s in the soil). Such a remarkable product should certainly be shared and our host will grace us with a sampling, while educating us on the way to distinguish an oil of exceptional quality. More that a treat for the tastebuds, this soul-satisfying experience is heightened by the tasting venue; lush greenery, beautiful olive trees, and a stunning vista that spans all the way to the Adriatic Sea.

After this delightful experience, we’ll make our way to the city of Piran for a walking tour. Piran is the most picturesque of coastal towns in Slovenia. The Italian influences of yore, combined with the preserved charm, make Piran uniquely alluring. As part of the great Venetian Republic for centuries Piran boasts stunning Venetian architecture throughout the city. As we uncover the history of this enchanting city we’ll find out hat weather forecast the locals rely on the most, and just why Saint George has been chosen as the city’s patron saint. 

We’ll dine at one of the local restaurants in Piran, for our lunch. The restaurant is located seaside, offering a captivating view of the true beauty and reflective blue waters of the Adriatic Sea. The restaurant is recognized for its outstanding offering of extraordinary, fresh, local seafood dishes and specialties.

We’ll return to Ljubljana for the evening where we’ll gather for our farewell dinner.

Day 6: Departure
