Day 1: Meet, Tour, Lunch, Acclimate
We will meet at the Santiago Airport. If your flight originates in the US you will arrive in the morning and meet the rest of our party to begin with an introductory tour of Santiago, Chile. This city is a wondrous combination of thriving metropolis and traditional Chilean life. Once we’ve learned a bit about this capital city we’ll have lunch and sample some of the mouthwatering dishes of this region.
After lunch, we’ll head to our accommodations for check-in. The rest of your afternoon is free, so enjoy getting to know this charming European-style boutique hotel. This historic manor is located in one of Santiago’s most exciting neighborhoods. You’ll find locals as well as visitors bustling about, taking in the cafes, bars, restaurants, and outdoor shopping plazas.
Day 2: Discover the Maipo Wine Region
Today we visit the Maipo Wine Region in Central Chile. This region is recognized for its varietals as well as a unique philosophy in wine-making.
After breakfast, we’ll journey to the Maipo region to begin a day dedicated to learning about Chilean wines. We visit a family-owned winery where all family members are involved in running the operations of the estate, including winemaking, cooking, cheese-making, sausage-making, and even more. There’s a lot to keeping a wine estate flowing seamlessly!
Next, we’ll enjoy lunch and a wine tasting in the shadows of the stunning Andes mountain range. This winery is well-recognized and celebrated for its production of high-quality wines. No doubt, the geographical and climatic conditions surrounding the vineyards contribute greatly to the wines’ character.
We wrap up our visit to the Maipo region today with a tour of one of Chile’s most historic wineries. For more than 160 years this winery has been devoted to the production of high-ranking wines. No doubt, the sheer dedication of those involved is why this particular winery has the longest-running track record as a leader in the wine industry. This is an outstanding opportunity to view the operations behind this top-level winery and sample the celebrated wines they produce.
We return to Santiago where you can do as you choose. After such a full day your evening is your own.
Day 3: Valparaiso, Casablanca
After breakfast, we’ll journey to a very exciting and unique destination: Valparaiso, Chile. This colorful town is known as the street art capital of Chile. A port city, Valparaiso’s seaside location only adds to the magical character of the colorful homes, which create an architectural rainbow that spans the valley.
We’ll stroll narrow passages as they wend past the multitude of stairways, ride the funicular elevators of Valparaiso, and take in breathtaking panoramic views from the multiple lookout points dotted throughout this World Heritage City. The cobbled hilltop streets of Ceros Alegre and Concepción are awash with vibrant colors and a site all their own.
Along the tour, you’ll hear vivid stories of the rich history of this Bohemian port city, learn about Valparaiso’s favorite hero, and find out how the very earth upon which you stand was reclaimed from the sea. Valparaiso’s beautiful old buildings harken back to a time of glory when this port was celebrated as one of the richest in the world, and the single most important city in all of South America.
Just as the colorful cityscape provides a treat to your eyes and the food of Valparaiso will surely excite your other senses. Sample a famous South American cookie and enjoy some of the traditional local foods as well as spend your free time getting to know this “Jewel of The Pacific”.
After our afternoon in Valparaiso we’ll make our way back to Santiago, but, first, we will stop for a wine tasting at one of our favorite wineries. Once back at the hotel, you will have a free evening to do as you please.
Day 4: Aconcagua Valley Alpacas and Wine
After breakfast, we will drive to Aconcagua Valley. This region is known as one of the top wine-producing regions in Chile, but first, we must see the beautiful Alpacas of the Aconcagua Valley.
These gentle animals aren’t just cute but also a source of income for their soft fleece, which can be spun into fabric to make scarves, socks, sweaters, and more. You’ll have an opportunity to explore their lovely boutique of upscale clothes and accessories. Perhaps you’ll find that special something for yourself or someone back at home.
We bid adiós to the alpaca and stop for lunch at one of the Valley’s top wineries. This winery is a key player in the Aconcagua region and the loving and innovative efforts of the family put this winery on the map. The winery was founded in 1870 and is still a leader in wine production in the region today.
Although the region is renowned for its focus on the richer mountain-produced reds like Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Carmenere, this winery is increasing its focus on cooler, coastal growing sites. The slate-rich soil and coastal breezes are perfect for complex Chardonnays, Pinot Noir, and Syrahs.
After our stop at this innovative winery, we head back to Santiago where you can spend your evening relaxing and preparing for our journey to Argentina in the morning.
Day 5: On to Argentina, Lunch and Asado dinner
Today, we wake up early and board our flight across the Andes from Santiago to Mendoza, Argentina. We hope for a clear day during which our flight provides a truly captivating view of these regal and rugged mountains.
Upon arrival in Mendoza we will deposit our bags while we enjoy lunch at a winery. You’ll then have a few hours to rest, relax and familiarize yourself with this beautiful hotel.
At 6 pm, we will meet in the lobby and make our way to enjoy our evening in a private winery where we will enjoy Asado in the company of locals who invite us to take part in their familial and social experiences. It’s truly the best way to become a part of the culture of Argentina. You’ll be invited to assist in the art of Asado, the traditional barbecue of Argentina.
After this wonderful meal we will make our way back to the hotel where we will rest up for the next day’s activities.
Day 6: An Immigrant Story and Wine Pairing
Today, we’ll find ourselves enthralled by a wonderfully charming and interesting story of those who immigrated to Argentina from Northern Italy. We visit the winery they created from vines they brought from their homeland, as well as the olive trees they nurtured from home. We’ll enjoy tasting and sampling the lovely wines among the vineyard vines.
Next, we make our way to a simply beautiful wine estate for lunch pairing and tasting. You’ll so enjoy the different pairings of local wine with traditional and locally-sourced dishes.
We then return to our hotel and enjoy an evening of leisure as we prepare for the next day’s events.
Day 7: Wine Tasting, One-of-A Kind Lunch and Wine Pairing
After breakfast, our visits today take us on a wonderful journey to a family-owned winery. We’ll hear the stories of how this family came to produce such incredible wines and relax in the splendor of such an awe-inspiring setting.
We’ll then say our goodbyes and make our way to the next event: A mouth-watering and one-of-a-kind lunch pairing and wine tasting. This truly unique experience where your tasting is enhanced by stories connecting the food with wine. This experience will be one you’ll certainly remember.
We return to our Mendoza hotel to pack and prepare for our next day’s journey to the next chapter in our adventure-the exciting city of Buenos Aires!
Day 8: On to Buenos Aires
Today, we say so long to the beautiful wine country and fly to Argentina’s capital, Buenos Aires.
When we arrive, we’ll deposit our luggage at our hotel and begin our introductory tour of the exciting Buenos Aires.
We'll stroll through Recoleta Cemetery, which is a popular tourist destination. Here, you will see history unfolding before your eyes. There are notable and noble Argentinians who’ve made Recoleta their final resting place. The mausoleums are architectural masterpieces and colorful tributes to many of the area's celebrated families. You’ll find many interesting stories throughout this popular tourist destination.
After our tour, get ready to roll up your sleeves and invite your inner chef to a class where you’ll learn how to make some of Argentina’s most popular dishes, including empanadas.
We’ll then go back to our hotel to relax for the evening and prepare for the full day tomorrow.
Day 9: An Immersive Tour of Buenos Aires
Today we immerse ourselves in life in Buenos Aires with a full-day tour of this lively city. We will visit the San Telmo market, or Mercado San Telmo, located in the Plaza Dorrego. The market is a wonderful place to browse, shop, and enjoy many of the local flavors. We recommend you enjoy a choripae or two. This is classic Buenos Aires fare in the form of a juicy chorizo sausage sandwich. You’ll find many different varieties of choripane throughout the market. The classic sandwich includes chimichurri sauce, or sometimes, a creole sauce. However, some vendors offer everything from cheese sauce to guacamole to dress your sandwich.
Other notable items you’ll find in the nearly 300 stalls of the Mercado San Telmo include antiques, glassware, and traditional artisan crafts of Argentina. Keep an eye out for street musicians and performers throughout the market square.
We end our day in Buenos Aires with an authentic Tango show and light dinner.
Day 10: Enjoy Your Day as You Like
On your final day of your South American Adventure, we invite you to enjoy as much as you can. Meander through the arts and crafts offered by street vendors throughout the neighborhood markets in Palermo and/or Recoleta. People watch and take in some of the sites of life in this vibrant city.
