In the heart of Porto lies a place that feels more like a storybook portal than a bookstore. Lello Bookstore isn’t just a shop—it’s a space where creativity hangs in the air and imagination runs wild. With thousands of books lining the shelves and an atmosphere that whispers tales from another time, it’s easy to understand why so many visitors are captivated the moment they enter.

It’s said that J.K. Rowling, who lived in Porto in the early 1990s, was a regular here. Married to a Portuguese journalist at the time, she often came to Lello in the afternoons to sip tea and soak in the magic. Locals remember her presence. And if you look around the shop today, it’s hard not to feel the connection. The scholarly uniforms of Porto’s university students resemble the robes of young wizards, and the ambiance seems tailor-made for storytelling.

Whether she found direct inspiration here or not, there’s no doubt that Lello feels like the kind of place where stories are born—where you walk in as a reader and leave with a mind full of new worlds.

Due to its popularity, the bookstore now requires an entrance ticket, which can be used toward the purchase of a book. To fully enjoy the experience, consider arriving early in the morning or just before closing, when it’s a bit quieter.
