2 minute read

Dreams of Italy often evoke images of the sunny vineyards in Tuscany, the canals of Venice or the bustle of the ancient and always-fascinating Rome. Italian coastal towns like Amalfi, the Riviera or delightful Capri are also popular and iconic Italian destinations. However, Lake Como is fast becoming a travelers’ favorite escape. Here’s why-

Charming Towns and Grand Villas

Almost everyone who's anyone knows Lake Como is the favored home of George and Amal Clooney. The beauty and tranquility of this peaceful paradise hasn’t gone unnoticed by other famous folk. But Hollywood’s elite recognize what is obvious to those who’ve been there; Lake Como is just about the perfect place to escape the grind of everyday life, relax and recharge.

There are several charming villages, each with its own character and appeal. Some of these villages are practically undiscovered by tourists and allow the visitor to experience true Lake Como life.

The cobblestoned town of Como is home to medieval towers and walled fortifications dating back hundreds of years. Como offers a great example of 19th century neoclassical architecture in its villas and small family shops. Each of the lovely little towns that surround Lake Como exude a certain magic that will make you want to stroll the quiet streets and greet each resident as a friend.

Villa  Balbianello is a beautiful site. The terraced gardens of the villa are magnificent and the view over Lake Como is breathtaking. Built in the late 1700s on the site of an ancient monastery, Villa Balbianello is somewhat of a Hollywood star itself. You may recognize this beautiful mansion from its appearance in such famous movies as the James Bond epic Casino Royale and the blockbuster Star Wars Attack of The Clones.

Gorgeous Gardens and Iconic Views

The compact town of Bellagio is the true Pearl of The Lake, as its nickname states. Located where the arms of the lake meet, Bellagio provides some of the most stunning and iconic views of Lake Como.

The Villa Melzi complex in Bellagio is a botanical paradise. Although the villa itself is private property the gardens are open for public viewing. From the moment you disembark at the boat landing and stroll through the avenue of trees you’ll be enchanted by the amazing display of native, exotic and rare plants. Strolling the garden surrounding the villa is truly like stepping into a fairyland.

History and Architecture

The town of Como’s 14th century Cathedral, or Duomo is a Gothic delight. The marble facade has detailed carvings and stone statues surrounding the rose window. Stepping into the Duomo you’ll notice the seamless meshing of Gothic and Renaissance periods. The deeply carved main altar is stunning and you can climb to the top of the 18th century dome if you feel up to it.

There are so many examples of different architectural periods throughout the towns of Lake Como. From churches to museums and monuments you will discover the fascinating history of the Lake Como area.

Shopping

While Lake Como is undoubtedly one of the more aesthetically pleasing destinations, it is also a great place to shop for beautiful one-of-a-kind artisan crafts and rare items you’ll find nowhere else in the world. Of course Bellagio offers gorgeous high-end clothing, shoes and leather goods but you’ll also discover silk ties, scarves and other luxurious items made from this sumptuous fabric.

Silk production in Lake Como began in the 1400s and nearly all of the silk goods you find throughout Italy and the region come from Lake Como. The  abundance of Mulberry trees and the preponderance of silk worms create a natural boon for the silk trade.

Olive oil probably isn’t your first thought when it comes to the northern towns of Italy but the oil produced from local Lake Como groves is said to rival any olive oil in Italy.

A Must-Do

Entirely enchanting and supremely enjoyable, a visit to Lake Como should be a part of your discoveries in Italy.

A visit to Lake Como could be a great extension to a trip to Piedmont or any other trip to Italy.
